EP 237: Cheerleaders 📣 Make All the Difference 📣

podcast

Recently I went into my doctor’s office for the first time since before the pandemic. We’ve seen each other a bunch of times on video calls, but I wanted her to look at some skin issues in person. In preparation for our visit I did fasting blood work so we could call this rare IRL encounter a complete physical.

Turns out the skin issues were minor and cosmetic which was a relief. What wasn’t great is my blood work. It was showing signs of long terms health consequences: blood pressure was a little high as was my A1c.

Coming from a family with diabetes on both sides and my mom’s early death at 69, I was disappointed. Here I am someone who works with people on their self-care and things are moving in the wrong direction.

As I sat in the office with my doctor I finally asked her why she doesn’t seem concerned with the direction of my numbers.

“I know you are someone who is good at creating and maintaining habits. Add a walk on most days of the week for the summer and let’s test again in a few months. I am confident that with one change your numbers will move in the right direction.”

She is right. I AM someone who is good at making changes in my life. Most days I am lacing up my sneakers and heading out the door before I do anything else.

Knowing someone has my back helps remind me that I am never alone and can use their support to keep me going.
